2019 Chevrolet Blazer

Some old-school Chevrolet fans were likely excited and then disappointed when the brand announced it was bringing the Blazer nameplate back, but as a mid-size crossover. Overview

The Blazer enters a vehicle market that has been largely ignored by mainstream automakers. Among the large manufacturers, only Ford and Nissan currently offer a five-seat premium crossover, with the Edge and Murano. Well-priced Jeep Grand Cherokees may also be considered in this category. Perhaps the German luxury brands scare away any competition – the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q5 and Porsche Cayenne compete in this area as well.

In the Chevy line-up, the Blazer fits nicely into the price gap between the compact Equinox and the three-row Traverse. Wheelbase wise, the Blazer is almost exactly between the two, at 112.5 inches – the Equinox comes in at 107.3 inches and the Traverse is 120.9 inches. The same is true for total length. The Blazer measures out to be 193.6 inches, where the Equinox is 183.1 inches and the Traverse 204.3 inches. Some automakers would use those extra inches to cram a third-row into the back, but Chevy wisely ignored the urge. The Blazer’s tapered profile would make for cramped quarters, and Chevy already has three triple-row SUVs in the Traverse, Tahoe, and Suburban.

Although designed with urban and suburban buyers in mind, the Blazer offers a surprisingly high towing capacity. All-wheel drive models paired with the beefy 3.6-liter V6 can tow up to 4,500 pounds – enough for almost any type of leisure activity-oriented trailering. Front-wheel drive Blazers are able to tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds.

Features

The 2019 Blazer is the perfect mix of sleek looks and useable functionality. This SUV is high-tech while still retaining switches for commonly used buttons. Its intuitive cabin is as comfortable as it is chic.

Starting from the front, you’ll notice easy-to-use door handles and loads of storage. There are six conveniently-located USB ports throughout the cabin, including two advanced USB-C ports that allow for super quick charging. The front USB ports do double duty as the auxiliary inputs for the sound system, one of a couple ways to listen to your phone’s music service through the car’s sound system. Chevrolet’s MyLink software serves as the interface for the eight-inch full-color touch screen. MyLink offers turn-by-turn navigation, SiriuisXM® satellite radio, Pandora® internet radio, podcast player Stitcher™, text message alert, and, for iPhone® users, Siri Eyes Free®.

The Blazer’s infotainment doesn’t end there. Bluetooth connectivity adds hand-free calls and additional access to the music on your phone. The Blazer is also fully compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These two systems mirror some of the most popular apps on Apple and Android devices, giving you easy access to maps and your favorite music services and podcast providers. When your phone hits low battery, don’t mess with a distracting tangle of cords. Just slide your compatible smartphone onto the wireless charging tray. You’ll be at full power in no time. Also available is a class-leading 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that transforms your Blazer into a connectivity hub.

You can remain connected to the Blazer from anywhere with the myChevrolet app. This app can serve as a remote key fob. With the app, you can remotely start and stop your vehicle, lock and unlock the doors, and even sound the horn. The app tracks your vehicle as well and will help you locate the vehicle, set certain geofences, and receive customized alerts. Also contained in the app are vehicle management tools and owner resources.

Chevrolet offers nearly 175 accessories to customize your 2019 Blazer. The Blazer can be customized to fit basically any lifestyle. Exterior accessories range from luggage racks to body decals while interior options are as varied as floor mats and headrest infotainment screens. You’ll also find Chevy recommend cleaning products and tools listed among the available accessories.

Chevy offers the Blazer with nine different packages that combine accessories and certain features. The “Sun and Wheels” package upgrades the front-seat moon roof to a panoramic moon roof and adds unique wheels. The “Hit the Road” package will get you roof rack cross rails and black assist steps. Add in all of the independent accessories available, and there are thousands of combinations from which to choose.

Performance

At this time, the Blazer is offered with two engines:

  • 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 193 horsepower
  • 3.6-liter V6 with 308 horsepower

Engine choice is not totally up to the buyer, as only one trim, Blazer Cloth, is offered with both engines. The base L trim is available only with the 4-cylinder engine. Blazer Leather, RS, and Premier trims all come with the V6. Both engines are paired with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission and come equipped with start/stop technology. This feature shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at a stop and the brake pedal is firmly pressed. The engine will turn back on as soon as the driver lets up on the brake.

Fuel economy is dependent on both drive type and engine size. As expected, AWD models with the V6 and high towing capacity get the worst mileage, with splits of 18 city/25 highway/21 combined. FWD models will get 20 city/26 highway/22 combined (V6) and 22 city/27 highway/24 combined (4-cylinder) respectively.

Front-wheel drive models, regardless of engine, are capped at a trailer capacity of 1,500 pounds. You’ll have to upgrade to the all-wheel drive equipped V6 engine found in the Blazer Leather, RS, and Premiere trims to unlock the 4,500-pound trailer capacity.

The Blazer comes equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife brake rotors and four-channel ABS. These play a large part in the 126-foot stopping distance from 60 miles per hour, which is average for the class. All models come with electronically assisted steering that should give drivers a confident, secure handling feel. The Blazer has engine and drive types for a wide range of users.

Interior

If you haven’t heard already, the Chevy Blazer RS has been nominated for Ward’s best interior honor. The best work is done in the front-seat, where this sporty SUV gives you a commanding view of the road.

As soon as you enter the Blazer RS, your eyes are immediately drawn to the bright-red air vents. Both eye-catching and functional, these vents turn right for warm air and left for cold air. Conveniently nestled between the central air vents are two more power ports, perfect for charging your phone while keeping it within reach. From the infotainment system downward, the center stack tapers artfully into the shift lever, which contains another pop of color with the red “RS” logo. It’s a piece of branding that fits in well and doesn’t feel obnoxious or showy.

The standard eight-inch infotainment screen can control almost everything in the car, but Chevy is smart to leave some redundant buttons in the center stack. You can still adjust the temperature, seat heaters and music volume with the touch of real button – eliminating the need to take your eyes of the road to look at the screen.

The Blazer also avoids the misconception that sleek and sporty has to be small. The leather-wrapped and red-stitched steering wheel feels appropriate for a vehicle of the Blazer’s size, but it isn’t chunky or obstructive. The door handles are big enough to find without looking. The front doors contain two compartments, a good use of space for storage of oft-needed items, such as an umbrella. Sitting in the driver’s seat of a Blazer is much like seeing it from the outside. It’s an SUV, but with a sense of style.

Safety

If there is one thing drivers want from their SUV, whether it be a tiny sub-compact or an old-school nine-seat SUV, it’s safety. The Blazer offers up-to-date safety technology that can give drivers and their passengers peace of mind. Standard and optional safety features available on the 2019 Blazer include:

  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Forward Automatic Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Standard HD Rear Vision Camera
  • HD Surround Vision
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Safety Alert Seat (Driver)
  • Standard Teen Driver System

Teen driver technology helps parents manage their household’s youngest drivers. Teen Driver turns off audio until seat belts are buckled, automatically turns on all advanced safety features, and keeps a record of the drive so you can help your teen driver learn and improve.
