This all-new model of the Equinox comes with the brand new addition of a 1.6L diesel engine. It’s turbo charged and fuel efficient too, estimated to get up to 40 mpg on the highway. Many people have been hoping for a diesel-powered option in the Equinox, and it will be available as soon as summer of 2017. According to Chevy it will be the only competitor in the North American segment to off this type of fuel efficient diesel engine.
If you’d still like to get awesome gas mileage but aren’t interested in using diesel fuel, there are two turbo-charged gas powered engines also available. First is a 1.5L Ecotec engine offering 170 horsepower, and up to 32 highway mpg when paired with FWD. Next is a 2.0L engine that will get up to 252 horsepower and gives you the towing capability of up to 3,500 pounds. Both the 1.5L and the 1.6L engines will stick with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0L engine (also available summer 2017) will have the all-new nine-speed automatic transmission.
Turbo-charged engines work by using exhaust gas force to get more air into the engine than a non turbo-charged engine. This equates to more power and the ability to get up to speed quicker, even when hauling a heavy load. So the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is the most powerful one yet. It’s also super quiet, and offers smooth acceleration and braking.
Something else that’s new in the 2018 model is the switchable AWD and Tow/Haul buttons. Switchable all-wheel drive allows you to decide exactly when you want AWD to be working. You can switch between FWD and AWD while on the go, great for coming off of a snow-plowed highway onto an icy side road. AWD is available on all trims except for the L. Tow/Haul mode, which comes on with models equipped with the 2.0L engine, allows you to push a button and let your vehicle know when it’s time to assist with hauling. Both of these buttons really help to maximize the perfect balance between fuel economy and power.
