For 2016, Motor Trend pitted the best cars from Audi, BMW, Kia, Nissan, Scion, Volkswagen, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-AMG, and Toyota. The winner? Chevrolet toppled the tower of contentious cars with the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. Rated and scored among six categories, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro performed well enough to take the title of Motor Trend Car of the Year. Here’s how.
The six categories used to score the Motor Trend Car of the Year contenders are:
- Advancement in Design
- Engineering Excellence
- Performance of Intended Function
As far as advancing its design, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is the first model year of the 6th generation of Camaro. Everything about the vehicle has been redesigned and improved upon. Motor Trend mentions that the new look of the Camaro is more evolutionary instead of revolutionary. Surely, we’d agree. However, inside the car the Camaro has seen massive improvements in interior design.
Efficiency isn’t what the Camaro is all about. When people look at getting into a Camaro, they’re looking for style, performance, and practicality. However, for its class, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has no difficulty topping the charts in fuel efficiency. While official fuel ratings place the Camaro and the Mustang neck and neck, Motor Trend’s own fuel comparison found the Camaro SS to perform slightly better than the Mustang GT in fuel economy.
While official safety ratings have yet to be published for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro by the IIHS or NHTSA, the Cadillac ATS and CTS that are built on the same architecture have been scoring very well. Motor Trend believes that there is no reason to believe that this further evolution of the same Alpha platform would be any less safe.
With prices starting at $27k for a 275-horsepower turbo engine, $28.5k for the 335-horsepower V6, and $37k for the behemoth 455-horsepower V8, there’s no arguing that that new Camaro isn’t a bargain.
Motor Trend claims that Chevrolet knocked the ‘Engineering Excellence’ criteria out of the park with the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. From the last year, the new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS dropped more than 200 pounds. With weight being the biggest enemy to performance, the new Camaro offers better performance metrics all around. The quarter mile in the new Camaro gets crossed in only 12.4 seconds, which leads us right into the ‘Performance of Intended Function’ criteria.
Motor Trend believes that the new Camaro actually transcends this criterium as the best production ponycar the world has ever seen. That’s quite the moniker. After testing the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, Motor Trend journalists found themselves discussing comparison tests with the radically expensive BMWs, Audis, and AMGs. The Camaro transcends the ponycar class and leaves the Mustang GT in it, all alone… and sad.
