School’s out, and many families are hitting the road for summer vacation. You can make the best memories on the road spending time with loved ones and checking out cool sights. You want to have a great time and make new memories. You also want to be safe and smart on the road. Here are some tips you should follow to make sure your road trip is as smooth and enjoyable as possible:
Before You Leave
Set a budget – Driving is often cheaper than flying, but it can still be expensive. You have to factor in the cost of gas, hotels, food, and more. Figure out how much everyone can chip in for the trim. Your budget will affect how far you travel and where you stay and eat.
Plan your itinerary – Decide exactly what cities and sites you want to hit on your trip. Do some research to find out about must-see places that you might never have the chance to see again. Also, plan what routes you take so you can avoid areas with heavy traffic, closed roads, and construction.
Book a rental car, hotels, and other accommodations – Once you set your budget and plan your day-to-day itinerary, it’s time to reserve all of your accommodations. If you’re renting a car, book it in advance to ensure that one is available and you get the best deal. Do the same with hotels or Airbnbs. Then, you’ll know exactly where you’re staying and how much you’re paying each night. If you need some flexibility, try to book through websites that don’t require immediate payment and/or don’t have any cancellation fees.
Get your car ready – Have your car inspected before you go. Fix or replace any broken parts, top off all fluids, and inspect your tires and brakes. And, make sure you bring a spare tire and all of the tools you’d need to change a flat.
Put together a road trip playlist – Plan your entertainment so you don’t have to worry about it when you’re trying to focus on the road. Let all passengers add music or podcast episodes so you have a good variety, and then everyone will enjoy themselves.
Pack only the essentials – You don’t want to haul around clothes and toiletries that you don’t need. Pack outfits that are interchangeable and easy to wash, and that actually fit with your road trip. Also, pack emergency supplies, like water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, a phone charger, and a first aid kit.
Bring toys and games for the kids – Kids get bored and restless on the road, especially on really long drives. Make sure you have activities that are fun for everyone you’re traveling with, like coloring and activity books or a portable DVD player. There are also tons of great road trip games that people of all ages can play, like iSpy or the alphabet game.
Take cash – Credit cards are convenient, but they’re not accepted everywhere. You should always have some cash on you in case of emergency.
On the Road
Follow the rules of the road – Don’t speed or disobey any traffic laws. You want to keep everyone safe, and you don’t want to get hit with an expensive traffic ticket.
Keep your eyes on the road at all times – This also ties in with keeping everyone safe. Taking your eyes off the road for even a second can be dangerous. And, you don’t want to miss any turns or exits. Let someone else handle the music and directions while you focus on driving.
Document your trip – Take as many photos and videos as you can. You’ll want to remember every moment of your trip. You can also right about it in a journal.
Be flexible – You have an itinerary, but it shouldn’t be too tight. Making last minute changes can be fun. And, there may be cool places and sights that you won’t know about until you’re on the road.
