Chevrolet and Cadillac have picked up a few 2020 J.D. Power APEAL Awards! The Chevrolet Blazer was named the best midsize SUV, and the Cadillac CT6 ranked as the best upper midsize premium car. Cadillac was also the third-highest ranking brand in the luxury segment. The APEAL Awards are based on J.D. Power’s 2020 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.
The APEAL Study analyzes new vehicle owners’ experiences with their cars in the first 90 days that they own them. This year, J.D. Power analyzed owners of 2020 model-year vehicles. The company measured the vehicles and brands on over 30 attributes, including performance, design, comfort, and safety. The attributes were scored on a 1,000-point scale.
The Cadillac CT5 the the second-highest rated midsize premium car, and the Cadillac XT5 is the second-highest ranked midsize premium SUV. The Cadillac Escalade is also the second-highest ranked large premium SUV. Chevrolet Sonic came in second in the small car segment, and the Chevrolet Tahoe ranked third in the large SUV segment.
Dave Sargeant, the vice president of automotive quality for J.D. Power, said: “The APEAL Study measures an owner’s emotional attachment to their new vehicle and in what areas the vehicle may not be delivering on all of the positive experiences that were hoped for. Understanding this is just as valuable to automakers as knowing about quality issues and owner acceptance of new technologies.”
The Cadillac CT6 was one of only eight vehicles to top the upper midsize premium car segment in the 2020 APEAL Study and J.D. Power’s 2020 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The IQS focuses on the problems vehicle owners have with their cars in the first 90 days that they own them. It measures vehicle components that fail and features that are hard to understand, difficult to use, or don’t work the way owners want.
Those components include powertrains, controls and displays, driving assistance, interior, and exterior. This year’s IQS is also based on 2020 model-year vehicles. In the 2020 IQS, Cadillac tied with Ram for second-highest overall quality among domestic brands. That means Cadillac’s components are easy to understand and use, and work the way owners want.
The Chevrolet Sonic ranked first in the small car segment. The Sonic also had the highest score of any model across all segments. Other winners in the 2020 IQS include the Chevrolet Malibu, and the Cadillac CT5, XT4, and Escalade. Runner-ups include the Chevrolet Trax, Equinox, Blazer, Tahoe, Colorado, and Silverado HD.
Sargent said: “The Initial Quality Study is the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality and, year after year, automakers apply the insights they learn from consumers to make positive changes. The higher problem levels we see in this year’s study don’t mean vehicle quality has worsened; rather, the redesigned study asks additional questions that allow owners to cite more of the problems that they are experiencing.
There’s also the 2020 J.D. Power Tech Experience Index Study. Its results will be announced later this month. Car manufacturers use the APEAL Study to help them design and develop more appealing vehicles. Consumers also use it to help them decide what vehicles to buy. The IQS helps manufacturers identify and fix problems with their vehicles.
