Chevrolet celebrates 100 years of trucks this year, and they’re throwing quite the party to celebrate! The Chevy Centennial Celebration in Texas this year saw a ton of exciting news and special-edition trucks. Here are six of the most impressive models from throughout Chevy’s pickup timeline!
1978 Chevrolet Performance Classic Truck Concept
This SEMA concept debuted back in 2013. It’s based on a semi-rough 1978 Chevy from Wisconsin, and has a new powertrain under its beautiful two-tone paint. GM engineers replaced the old powertrain with a 5.3L E-ROD crate V8, paired with a modern 4L70-E four-speed automatic transmission. It also has classic off-road wheels. Aside from the powertrain, GM’s restoration kept the truck mostly stock. It’s a wonderful throwback to its era.
2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
This heavy-duty example is the very last Silverado to roll off the assembly line on the GMT 800 platform. Although it seems like a run-of-the-mill model at first glance, this 11-year-old truck has clocked less than 100 miles. It’s part of GM’s heritage collection and has been since it rolled off the line. This Silverado is special because of its time-capsule status. Properly preserved, this 2007 model will someday be a vintage model like its predecessors!
1956 Chevrolet 3100 “Task Force”
This 1956 model is bone-stock, fiddly transmission and all. It’s part of the short run of Chevy trucks following the Advance Design family, which ended in 1955. After that, the truck lineup became the “Task Force.” Chevy gave their trucks names like Apache, Spartan, and Viking depending on their size and capability. This one, however, is just called the 3100. Because of its quirks, a Chevy handler was at the event to give journalists and enthusiasts a ride. It’s an astonishingly smooth and comfortable ride for a 60-year-old pickup! The well-preserved 50’s interior decor added to the charming nostalgia of the ride.
2014 Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne SEMA Concept
In a tantalizing modern concept model, Chevy shows off what could have been: a standard short-bed Silverado kitted out with features from the Camaro Z/28. This truck had a mighty L86 6.2L V8 engine, new at the time, that gave it 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It also had the wheels and carbon ceramic brakes from the Camaro, which made the lowered and darkened truck even more aggressive. Inside, the Silverado Cheyenne got the Camaro’s steering wheel and Recaro seats, too.
1971 Chevrolet C/10
Many trucks from Chevy’s heritage collection made an appearance, but this classic C/10 stood out. This iconic late-60s/early-70s style is a look that can’t be beat, and this model was in fantastic condition. A 350 small-block engine powered it on a leisurely ride around the service roads surrounding the Texas Motor Speedway. The vague steering just seems like part of the experience 40 years down the road, and the ride was exceedingly comfortable. It’s a trusty pickup if there ever was one.
1926 Chevrolet Superior Express Truck
What a cool flashback of the truck industry! This stake-bed truck featured wood-spoke wheels and a noisy 2.8L four-cylinder under a side-lift hood. With no doors or windows, the Express Truck was a chilly ride in December. This one had a terrific array of driver controls and inputs, so once again a Chevy handler was there to give out rides. The Express Truck’s speed peaked below 40 miles per hours and braking seemed non-existent, but this truck is an interesting and fun piece of automotive history.
