The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is celebrating a big feat. When it’s equipped with the available 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine, it’s the most fuel-efficient full-size SUV in its class! Real-wheel drive models deliver 21 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 24 combined MPG.
Four-wheel drive models get up to 20 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 22 combined MPG. The Duramax turbo-diesel is the first diesel inline-six engine that Chevy has ever offered in a full-size SUV. It’s also the first diesel the brand has offered in an SUV in over 20 years.
The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel is also offered on the 2021 Chevy Suburban. Two-wheel drive Suburban Duramax models have a 21 city, 27 highway, 23 combined MPG rating. Four-wheel drive Suburban Duramax models with that engine have a 20 city, 26 highway, 22 combined MPG rating.
Bob Krapes, Chevrolet Trucks marketing director, said: “The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings a refined engine experience to the already impressive redesign of the all-new 2021 Tahoe and Suburban. Combining the segment’s best fuel efficiency with increased space inside of the vehicle compared to the previous generation equals all-new Tahoe and Suburban ready for the next long road trip or family adventure.”
Chevy first launched the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel on the 2020 Silverado. Since the engine was initially developed for pick-up trucks, the brand had to give it a few updates so it could be used in full-size SUVs. It now has enhanced noise abatement and a new engine control module. The turbo-diesel is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The new Tahoe 3.0L Duramax puts out 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Two-wheel drive Duramax models can tow an impressive 8,200 pounds, and they have a maximum payload of 1,717 pounds. New Suburban two-wheel drive models with this engine can tow up to 8,000 pounds. They have a maximum payload of 1,625 pounds.
These SUVs also have driver-selectable stop/start technology. It shuts off the engine when you’re at a stoplight or in other stop-and-go situations, which helps you save fuel. The Duramax turbo-diesel engine is available on 2021 Tahoe and Suburban LS, LT, RST, and Premier in place of the 5.3-liter V8 gas engine. It’s also available on High Country trims in place of the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine.
John Barta, the assistant chief engineer for this engine, said: “The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings responsive torque and a smooth driving experience, ideal for those who tow or spend many hours behind the wheel. Not only is the 3.0L Duramax a refined engine, but the total experience benefits from the efforts to deliver enhanced driving dynamics in Tahoe and Suburban through the independent rear suspension and available Magnetic Ride Control and Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension.”
