Are you excited for the new 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE? It just proved how track-capable it is by putting down an amazing 7:16.04 lap time at the Nurburgring! That’s a whole 13 seconds faster than the regular ZL1. This was always meant to be the most track-capable Camaro ever, so let’s recap the efforts that went into this astonishing lap time.
The 2018 Camaro ZL1 was going to be a beast even before Chevrolet equipped it with the 1LE package. The regular ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2L V8 which produces 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. It rockets from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds. The standard 2017 ZL1 put a 12-second lead on its predecessor’s lap time on the Nurburgring. Beating that new time, by an even larger margin, proves the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE clearly has the chops to be an outstanding track performer.
The 1LE package adds some race-ready details to the already strong contender of the ZL1. First of all, it isn’t available with the new 10-speed automatic transmission, only the six-speed manual. Before anyone complains about that, just remember that this manual ZL1 1LE trounced the automatic’s ‘Ring time by 13 seconds. Secondly, the 1LE package adds GM’s Multimatic spool-valve dampers to the Camaro. The Multimatic system is a racetrack-proven, versatile damping system that regulates compression damping and also controls rebound damping, for tight grip through the corners. It also lets the Camaro glide right over any imperfections in the road without throwing off its trajectory. Rounded out with new aggressive aerodynamics, the 1LE is ready to dominate at the track.
The 1LE package is redesigned to give it lots more downforce with just a few changes. Chevy engineers wanted the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE to retain its classic Camaro look but achieve much greater aerodynamics. So the 1LE package adds a large wing to the rear and big dive planes to the front. The front splitter is also larger on the 1LE, and the grille is larger to get more air to the engine. The suspension is stiffer than the standard ZL1, in addition to the special Multimatic dampers. It’s also 60 lbs lighter than the standard ZL1, and has 19-inch forged alloy wheels fitted with the biggest tires a Camaro has ever had. Like the other 1LE options, the ZL1 1LE won’t be offered as a convertible — this car is for racing, not cruising.
