The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has surpassed our expectations in a track test that clocks a top speed of 198 mph. The speed was averaged by driving two different directions of the track to compensate for wind speed. In the first direction going with the wind, the ZL1 managed to reach 202.3 mph. The ZL1 maintained a top result of 193.3 mph in the other direction. Chevrolet sent their ZL1 to Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg track. This track is a 7.6 mile long high-speed oval with 2.5-mile straights and 1.3 mile turns with 49.7-degree banking. The high banking allowed the ZL1 to be continuously throttled while running flat without pause.
In addition, the testing done at Papenburg had the ZL1 outfitted with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires set at 44 psi. This was a setting recommended for high-speed driving. The rest of the vehicle had stock parts with the exception of Chevrolets safety equipment and data loggers. One stock feature that offered an advantageous lift/drag ratio for the ZL1 was a stanchion rear spoiler. Another beneficial feature was an auxiliary transmission oil cooler cover that reduced front-end life while avoiding drag. Chevrolet even took their test further and saw the ZL1 average over 200 when fine-tuning the vehicle. They achieved this by adjusting the ZL1s front and rear camber to 0 degrees and setting the tire pressures to the maximum allowable sidewall pressure.
According to Al Oppenheiser, the chief engineer for the Camaro, the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 is “the most capable and fastest Camaro ever.” We believe him! Powering the ZL1 is a 650-hp 6.2L supercharged V-8 which allows the ZL1 to go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Furthermore, the ZL1 can complete a quarter mile run in an impressive 11.4 seconds at 127 mph. It also has a maximum g-force of 1.02g on corners and needs 107 feet to stop from 60-0 mph. Some nice added features are a Magnetic Ride Control, electronic limited-slip differential, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, Goodyear Eagle F1 wheels, and Brembo brakes with six-piston Monoblocc calipers and two-piece motors.
This is too good of a deal to pass up in our opinion. This is a sports car that is $63,435 for a coupe with manual transmission and $65,830 for the 10-speed automatic version. In contrast, the Jaguar F-Type SVR Coupe breaks the bank for a $125,950 while the ZL1 manages to halve the price and be capable of speeds even higher than 200 mph. This is truly a remarkable feat of engineering by Chevrolet and we are excited to see one of these in action.
