Put the 2019 Chevy Blazer and 2019 Honda Passport next to each other and it’s hard to believe they compete head-to-head. Despite their similar size, the two SUVs look totally different. The Blazer has the air of a sleek, city-dwelling SUV; the Honda a brute waiting to tackle trails. Both occupy the same segment, however. The Blazer slots between the compact Equinox and three-row Traverse on the Chevy side. The Passport falls in the middle of the compact CR-V and three-row Pilot. Despite these similarities, a quick look at the facts and figures shows the Blazer to be a better SUV.
The Blazer and Pilot both offer seating for five. You’ll find two captain’s chairs up front and a bench in the back. The Blazer’s starting price is over $3,000 less than that of the Pilot. A Blazer L starts at $28,800 and while the Passport Sport receives an MSRP of $31,990. The Blazer’s wheelbase is two inches longer than the Passport (112.7 inches and 111.0 inches) and rides a little lower as well (67.0 inches and 71.6 inches). This results in a smoother, more controlled ride.
When looking at power, the Blazer wins in both quantity and quality. The Passport offers one engine, a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Blazer gets a leg up on the Passport with two engines – a 2.5-liter four cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6. Both engines are paired with a nine-speed automatic, and their horsepower figures fit neatly around the Passport’s at 193 and 308 horsepower.
The quality comes into picture when you look at fuel efficiency – the Blazer beats or matches the Passport. The four-cylinder is the champ, with splits of 22 city /27 highway /24 combined. The V6s are close despite the Blazer’s 28-horsepower advantage. FWD models get 20/25/22 (Passport) and 20/26/22 (Blazer). The AWD engines are a dead heat, with the Passport hitting 19/24/21 and the Blazer getting 18/25/21.
When it comes to tech, these two models offer everything you would expect without any big breakthroughs on either side. Both offer a full safety-suite, smart phone integration, and even 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability.
