2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Overview

Since its release, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV has taken home lots of awards for its innovation and real-world capability. The Bolt is a real move toward electric vehicles that truly have mass appeal. Backed by one of the automotive industry’s giants, the Bolt means that EVs are here for the long run. Chevrolet already has thousands of public charging stations available, and more are in the works as the Bolt’s popularity climbs.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV offers a range of up to 238 miles on a full charge. If you’re commuting to work or puttering around town, the Bolt’s regenerative braking technology actually lets you recycle energy instead of losing it to traditional brakes. When it’s time to recharge, Chevrolet offers three options. A Level 1 charger is the basic three-prong, 120-volt outlet you have in your home or office. If your daily drive is pretty short, this slower method will do just fine: 12 hours of charging with a 120-volt outlet will give you about 48 miles of range. Chevrolet recommends that you install a Level 2 charger in your home for the most convenience. Level 2 is a 240-volt outlet that you can have an electrician install in just about any home. It will charge the battery from empty to full in just over 9 hours, so you don’t need to plug it in every single night. Many businesses, especially in urban areas, are choosing to install Level 2 chargers in their parking lots, so you might be able to top up at work, too. When you’re out and about, or when you’re planning a road trip, you can use the Chevrolet app or website to find Level 3 chargers. DC Fast chargers will give your 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV up to 90 miles of range in just 30 minutes, so they’re great to plug in to while you do your shopping.

Features

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is packed with features to make your drive comfortable in a number of ways. The detailed Driver Information Center lets you customize the display and the information you see. It can give you details on your energy usage so there’s no guessing as to how much battery life you have left. You can choose to see a detailed breakdown of your energy history and the percentage of your battery that different features are using, or choose to just see your charge and range like a traditional fuel gauge.

The standard 10-inch interactive infotainment display keeps you connected and entertained. You can connect your compatible smartphone through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and access hands-free calling as well as your personal music selection. You can control your navigation through the display and quickly access real-time vehicle information. The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV also connects with the myChevrolet mobile app, which has a host of convenient connection features. You can check on the charge status of your Bolt at any time, and even warm up your car while it’s charging. The app also locates charging stations near you, as well as locking or unlocking your doors from your phone.

You can also add a few packages to the Bolt to upgrade your convenience. The extra Infotainment Package expands your Bolt’s entertainment capabilities with a premium Bose seven-speaker sound system, wireless charging points for your devices, and two USB charging ports for rear passengers.

Performance

If you want the absolute best MPGe out of your Bolt, it’s best to take things slow and steady and use regenerative braking. The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV has a one-speed direct drive transmission and front-wheel drive. However, if you want to show off, it’s surprisingly quick and able, as well. The Bolt’s top speed is limited to 93 mph, and test drives report that it’s comfortably capable of cruising at 75 mph. It’ll go from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds — respectable for a small commuter car, and much faster than some of its EV competitors.

The regenerative braking system results in a new mode of operation called one-pedal driving. You can get up to .3 g of braking force when you’re not touching either pedal. Regenerative braking also extends your range, by converting your momentum into electricity for the motor. When you put the Bolt into Drove or Low Mode, regenerative braking can even bring the car to a full stop.

The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV delivers a comfortable ride, too. The low-mounted battery pack anchors the car’s weight, and gives the Bolt tidy, competent turning and handling abilities. It gives a nice, comfortable ride with well-tuned damping so that it stays composed over rougher roads or broken pavement.

Interior

While the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a compact little crossover, its designers organized the interior to make space for all the necessities. The Bolt accommodates six cupholders total, and there’s space for phones even if you don’t choose to add wireless charging stations. The battery position contributes to the amount of passenger and cargo space available: the floor is flat for more storage and easy entrance, and there’s no big gas engine taking up space in the front or rear. Your center console also offers storage bins big enough to put away a purse or other large items.

The Bolt offers a maximum 56.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which, while smaller than the average compact hatchback, is leaves more room for backseat passengers. The rear seats feature standard 60/40 split folding for versatility. The Premier trim comes with standard leather-trimmed and heated front and rear seats in three color options. Because of the heavy battery pack in the bottom of the vehicle, the Bolt offers generous headroom without compromising the vehicle’s driving balance. There’s also plenty of rear legroom for adults. For taller drivers, the tilting and telescoping steering column come standard for easy access to the front seat. You can also opt for a heated steering wheel for colder mornings.
