The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 started shipping out earlier this spring. If you didn’t get a chance to take it for a spin over spring break, maybe you’re planning your epic off-road adventure this summer. The new ZR2 trim is much more than just a lift kit on a Colorado — it makes this mid-size pickup into an amazingly capable off-roader. It even lets you go a little nuts and catch some air without breaking your spine when you come back down.
Which is exactly what test-driver Andrew Collins at Jalopnik did a few weeks ago during his run with the new ZR2. You’d probably expect to break something upon landing a 45-mph jump in an unmodified production pickup — either part of you or part of the truck. But the ZR2 was designed and equipped for crazy moves just like this. Collins’ ZR2 absorbed the landing with all 8.6 inches of its front suspension travel, then ploughed on ahead with no drama. The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes with segment-exclusive shocks that give you a cushy, no-nonsense ride no matter what kind of terrain you’re exploring. If you don’t feel like the standard 3.6L V6 engine gives you enough torque, the tough-as-nails Duramax 2.8L turbo-diesel engine is available.
The ZR2 is made to offer the best of both worlds. It offers hard-core off-road capability, including standard 4WD and the exclusive Multimatic spool-valve damping system. The ZR2 is able to roll out of the factory and take on whatever road you point it to. If you want to drive it to the hardware store, the ZR2 offers an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride that absorbs every pothole and bump. And if you’d rather take it immediately to the bumpiest, rockiest trail you know if, the ZR2 is ready for anything. It comes with standard off-road suspension, increased clearance and track width, and a transfer case shield to protect it over rough terrain. You also get standard all-terrain blackwall tires, Hill Descent Control, a trailer hitch and integrated trailer brake control, as well as standard front and rear locking differentials. Having front locking differentials in addition to rear gives the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 even more traction, and lets you conquer even more terrain.
This isn’t a rough-riding one-trick pony, either. Those Multimatic shocks provide an incredibly smooth ride in the city as well. The ZR2 has a more aggressive look to it, with a standard off-road appearance package and new front and rear bumpers, but it’s surprisingly well-mannered when you want it to be. Traveling on pavement, it’s stable and composed. You can definitely use it as your daily driver while you wait for any opportunity to blaze a new trail.
