Rumors have been flying around about a new Cadillac XT3 compact crossover SUV hitting markets in 2018. The release of a new compact CUV is exciting news for Cadillac. Currently Cadillac only offers one crossover; the XT5, and one SUV; the Escalade. Customers in the US market are currently pretty crossover obsessed. Around 60 percent of all US auto sales are going to crossovers, SUVs and trucks. With Cadillac’s current sedan saturated lineup, it’s clear to see why they’re trying to infiltrate the luxury crossover world. But just when will we actually see the XT3?
In a recent interview with the press, Cadillac President Johan De Nysschen discussed the reason for their future change in lineup. “The core part of our volume lineup is in the market that’s contracting while we are unable, as good as XT5 and Escalade are, to fully exploit the updraft that’s taking place in the other half of the market.”
Cadillac has serious plans to keep their lineup relevant to the current market and they’re not messing around. According to Nysschen, we should not only keep our eyes open for the new Cadillac XT3, but for up to three new crossovers by the end of the decade. In another recent interview, Nysschen told The Detroit News that the luxury car company plans to launch a new vehicle every six months starting around mid 2018. We predict their procession of new autos will start with the XT3. This brings their cover of the luxury market up from 50 percent to about 90 percent by the end of 2021.
In terms on design, speculations currently suggest that the Cadillac XT3 will have 4 doors, and two row seating for five. They are also suspecting four-cylinder engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations will likely be available. As far as exterior looks go, the XT3 could definitely turn out like a shrunken version of the XT5. However, some predict they will incorporate a coupe-like design, similar to the Audi Q2. Whatever design direction with which they choose to go, we can be sure that this CUV will be made of Cadillac’s signature high quality materials inside and out.
The new XT3 will be competing with many other luxury compact crossovers. Some which have already been in the market since 2004, like the BMW X3. The Audi Q5, the Lexus NX, Volvo XC60, and the Porche Macan will also be obvious competitors. So how will the Cadillac XT3 hold up to its competition? With the 2017 BMW X3 sitting right under 40k and the 2017 Lexus NX around 35k, we are left only to wonder how the XT3 will price.
