The 2018 Cadillac CT6 will feature the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology for the highway. The Cadillac engineers have created the Super Cruise™ system out of existing technology and their own long-awaited projects. Cadillac’s Super Cruise™ uses both a driver attention system and precision LiDAR map data to ensure safe hands-free vehicle operation. Super Cruise™ is meant to allow safe driving while the driver does small, common tasks. It’s meant to let you use the navigation system, adjust the infotainment or radio, or take a phone call. But you still probably shouldn’t use it to catch up on your book club reading — just to be safe, Super Cruise™ will be watching to make sure you’re still paying attention.
Super Cruise™ will use a small camera at the top of the steering wheel to make sure the driver is still supervising the vehicle at all times. The driver attention function uses infrared lights to track the driver’s head position and determine where the driver is looking. While Super Cruise™ is engaged, the system will monitor to make sure it is never left unsupervised for too long. If the driver’s attention is elsewhere, Super Cruise™ will continue to safely steer, but it will start to prompt the driver to pay attention. The alerts will escalate until the driver’s attention returns to the road. Alerts will include visual indicators on the instrument cluster, tactile alerts in the driver’s seat, and audible alerts, all as they become necessary. If the driver is truly unresponsive, the CT6 will come to a safe, controlled stop and use the OnStar system to contact emergency services. So no, you still can’t nap on your way to work.
Cadillac created this system to focus on customer convenience and safety. As part of this system, the 2018 Cadillac CT6 will add automatic lane-centering to its existing toolbox of safety technologies. It will automatically control speed and steering on the highway. The Super Cruise™ system is a data-rich approach to driver assistance. It gathers information from the environment all around the 2018 Cadillac CT6 to ensure that its automatic actions are safe.
Super Cruise™ is designed to be used only on divided, limited-access highways. This means you can only use it from the on-ramp to the off-ramp. Cadillac engineers found that their customers use limited-access highways twice as much as they use rural roads. Thus, the Super Cruise™ system is designed to work best on this kind of highway. There are often unforeseeable obstacles on rural roads and urban streets, requiring total driver attention. The Super Cruise™ system will be most effective and also most convenient on divided highways. As part of the Super Cruise™ creation, Cadillac engineers mapped every limited-access divided highway in the US and Canada. The precision LiDAR map is now part of what gives your 2018 Cadillac CT6 Super Cruise™ system the data it needs to take you in the right direction. As a convenient side effect, it also give you navigation that’s four to eight times better than current standard navigation systems.
