Recently, the US News Top 10 Compact Cars shortlist pitted the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze against the 2017 Ford Focus! These two compact cars have a lot in common for potential buyers, but critics and drivers alike have found several ways the Cruze stands out. Here are some of the reasons it beat out the Ford for the #10 spot on the Best Compact Cars list!
The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze has a leg up for all-around economy. The base models Cruze starts just $200 over the Focus, and it has quite a bit more standard technology than the Focus does. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Chevrolet Teen Driver are all among the standard features on the base Cruze. It also has standard power windows in the front and rear, instead of manual crank windows for the backseat passengers. You’ll save money on the road, too: the Cruze delivers 30 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway. If you want to go even further on a tank, the Cruze offers a diesel option that gets up to 52 mpg on the highway. The Ford Focus can match the gas-powered Cruze only on the SE trim, with a three-cylinder engine and manual transmission. The other Focus powertrains drop its mpg below average, to 25 in the city and 34 on the highway. If you want to be thrifty at the pump, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is the way to go.
The Cruze’s interior is also a well-rounded, pleasant space. Acoustic improvements and noise cancelling make for a nice quiet cabin. It’s also plenty spacious for adults to fill all five seats. If the sedan’s roofline is too short for that growth spurt your teenager just hit, the available hatchback configuration gives you more headroom. With an upgraded comfort package, you can add leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, and power-adjustable seats to your Cruze to make it a little piece of luxury. Meanwhile, rear passenger space is a common complaint about the Focus. Its generous front seat sacrifices the legroom for rear passengers, but it also has available upgrades to leather and power-adjustable seats.
Both of these cars are available in sedan or hatchback configurations, so they offer a variety of cargo options. The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze sedan offers 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space, or 13.9 cubic feet on the LT and Premier sedans. The Ford sedan offers 13.2 cubic feet in any trim, less than average for the compact car class. If your lifestyle includes consistently hauling more stuff or larger items, consider a hatchback before you look for an SUV. The Focus hatchback offers 43.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, while the Cruze hatchback gives you 47.2.
Standard technology on each car also puts the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze ahead of the competition. The Ford Focus features the Ford SYNC infotainment center with a 4.2-inch digital display with voice recognition. However, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are only available on more expensive trims. Both vehicles have Bluetooth and a USB port for. The Cruze comes out ahead with a 7-inch MyLink infotainment touchscreen display, a rearview camera, and Teen Driver in addition to its connectivity technology. It also has a Wi-Fi hotspot and OnStar that drivers can subscribe to after the standard free trial.
When it comes to performance, these two cars diverge a bit. The Focus has a wide range of engine choices, none of which are as fuel-efficient as either of the Cruze’s two options. If you’re planning on sneaking your daily driver off to some races, the Focus offers an RS trim with a 350-hp engine with a traction-enhanced all-wheel drive system. Because of the sportier tuning on the Focus, the performance-tuned hatchbacks lose ride quality. If your idea of adventure is more along the lines of a road trip or a camping weekend, look to the Cruze. It offers less power, but maintains plenty for highway maneuvering, especially the turbodiesel engine. The diesel is also available with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which is reportedly seamlessly functional. The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze provides a smooth, quiet ride and fewer gas stops than the Focus. So the question is, what do you prefer to do on your weekends?
If you’re looking for a family car, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze has a couple more important gold stars. This 2017 model received a four out of five on its predicted reliability score from J.D. Power and Associates, which is an above average rating. The Ford Focus received a rating of 2.5, or below average. The Cruze also comes standard with Chevrolet Teen Driver, which is incredibly helpful when your teenager finally gets their driver’s license. Teen Driver helps protect your family by letting you set limits on the car’s speed and volume, as well as automatically activating all of the driver assist systems you have. Your teen driver also can’t turn any audio on until their seatbelt is buckled.
